Welcome

Why are people interested in genealogy and their family history? Here’s my answer. The world has changed so much in the last 50 years that most of us are swept up in the dizzingly pace of change. In contrast, the discipline of genealogy helps ground me into time and place. Knowing where you came from and who your ancestors helps define who you are. Knowing that, I am just one of many fascinating characters on history’s long timeline reminds me what is important and to not sweat the small stuff.

Online genealogy and the internet

Even though researching one’s family history is a pursuit that has existed throughout the ages, the internet has brought a whole new dimension to it. It wasn’t too long ago that researching an ancestor meant a lot of traveling and searching to get access to valuable documents. However, now you can find out so much information through online genealogy sites. And that is just the beginning, you might have the opportunity to find lost cousins you didn’t know you had, and befriend other genealogists, all while in your pajamas at a time of your choosing! Online genealogy is powerful but also be careful.

Cherish the ones that have gone before you

Believe or not, the best way to get started with tracing your ancestors is not online. Interviewing your family can yield the most valuable information. Old photographs, stories about your ancestors often provide a context that helps your online searches. Spend time with the elders of your family before they are gone.
